How do I organize a car trip:
  1. First we specify the destinations - countries, cities.
  2. We look at Google, Google maps, Instagram and various travel blogs and sites, even travel agencies for landmarks. I mark the most interesting, check for entrance fees for museums/attractions and the like, if there are any, etc. This way I make a rough plan of what to visit in a given area and accordingly how many days for overnight stays I will need.
  3. With the advent of various Artificial Intelligence applications, the work of compiling my trip plans has become easier. I use ChatGPT because when I come across different destinations and cities, it helps me quite well with the idea of arranging the sequence of cities. For example, I give it countries and specific cities, giving it the task of arranging the sequence and giving me ideas for sights, as well as restaurants and anything else that comes to mind. Then I make a final comparison with the previously collected information and finally arrange the final vision of the trip.
  4. Accommodations - I usually use Google maps, and I mark the cities. Then I look for camping/accommodations in Booking. I look at reviews, prices, photos and finally I write them an email to book or book through the platform. When contacting the hosts it is best to write in their local language. Also when we travel in large groups of people sometimes the accommodations ask for a deposit in advance. Then I transfer money through Revolut to save bank fees for foreign transfers.
  5. Website to calculate travel expenses. Here you specify the type of vehicle, even the make and model; type of fuel, etc. Then you specify the different cities along the route and the site makes a final calculation of the route - times and fuel costs. Here I specify the main cities, excluding day trips.
  6. Website with information about vignettes and road taxes around Europe. I check each country I have chosen for travel expenses - vignette or toll tax. Sometimes there is an option to buy online and I usually buy for the first country. You can also buy at gas stations around the border.
  7. Website about fuel prices in Europe. I fill up on gas outside the highways whenever possible, the price is a little cheaper. I have noticed that in Europe the prices are very different at all gas stations.
  8. I review all documents - passport validity; powers of attorney, if necessary; car documents; debit/credit cards; car/motorcycle insurance; travel insurance; cash - a small amount of local currency.
  9. After all this, I now have a clear idea of how much of my budget is safe - in the case of our last trip to the Alps in 2024 - travel 500 euro, accommodation 15 nights with an average price of 50E=750 euro. So far 1250 euro. The rest varies - sights, parking (between 5 and 10 euro per day), food, etc.
